With a remarkable 52-year tenure, Dan left an indelible mark on the family-owned business that has been a cornerstone in the world of hydraulic press systems and processing equipment for the oilseed and synthetic rubber industries.

Early Years and Military Service

Daniel French’s journey with French Oil Mill Machinery Co. began in 1971, after an honorable service in the U.S. Air Force. A 1966 Princeton University graduate with a bachelor’s in sociology, French’s military career included five years of active duty, including service in Vietnam. His dedication earned him the rank of lieutenant colonel before retiring in 1994, having garnered numerous accolades and medals for his service.

Daniel French Rising Through the Ranks

Joining the family business marked the beginning of a new chapter for Daniel French. A third-generation member of the French family, he worked diligently in various roles, starting as a machinist and ascending through the ranks—assistant foreman, cost accounting, and purchasing manager. His dedication and hard work earned him promotions, culminating in his appointment as president in 1982, a position he held for an impressive 31 years.

Daniel French Navigating Change

As president and later as chairman and CEO, Daniel French steered French Oil Mill Machinery Co. through periods of significant change and economic cycles. His leadership saw the company adapting to market demands, adding new product lines, divesting non-core businesses, and expanding globally, including the establishment of a wholly owned foreign enterprise in Shanghai, China.

Family Legacy Continues

Daniel French’s legacy extends beyond his professional achievements. His daughter, Tayte French Lutz, joined the business in 2010 and, in September 2023, was elected as the company’s CEO and has since succeeded him as chairman of the board. She pays tribute to her father as her “No. 1 cheerleader and mentor,” acknowledging his unwavering commitment to the company and his exceptional example of servant leadership.

A Man of Principles

Daniel French’s leadership philosophy centered on key attributes—smartness, dependability, and, above all, honesty. In an interview with Rubber News celebrating his 50th anniversary with French in 2021, he emphasized the importance of hiring individuals whose integrity could be relied upon.

Honoring a Legacy

Beyond his contributions to the business, Daniel French was actively involved in many local civic organizations and professional organizations such as the Young President’s Organization – YPO, the Process Equipment Manufacturer’s Association – PEMA, the International Institute of Synthetic Rubber Producers – IISRP and the American Oil Chemists’ Society – AOCS. He played a vital role in the Ohio Manufacturer’s Association – OMA, where he served on the board for 19 years, leaving an enduring impact on the organization and the industry.
