French Contributes to STEM Education at Wilder

Students at the Wilder Intermediate School in Piqua, Ohio, are benefiting from new science equipment, funded by the French Oil Mill Machinery Company. Every year, French, Wilder’s business partner, makes a contribution to the school to help grow their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education program.

With the 2013 donation, Wilder purchased three Twist Flexible Digital Microscopes, one each for the fourth, fifth and six grade levels. These flexible microscopes allow teachers and students to showcase objects being observed in the microscope on a Smart Board or other projection device at the front of the classroom. The technology creates a more interactive learning environment and encourages discovery, allowing students to investigate items previously impossible to look at through traditional digital microscopes. Curt Montgomery, the school’s Principal, says the purchase is especially beneficial for the sixth grade class as they learn about cells and heredity.

Wilder also purchased a Lightning Ball, to be used primarily in the fifth grade science classes, to help students explore and understand the concepts of electricity, charge and weather. Leftover funds were used to purchase thirty pair of safety glasses to protect students during science experiments.

As another way to inspire and excite students about the career opportunities associated with the ever-growing STEM industries, French hosts plant tours for Wilder students every year. French also supports the school with fundraising and student mentoring.
